How to Download All Transcripts from a YouTube Channel

YouTube lets you read one video's transcript at a time. To get the text of a whole channel you need a script or a bulk tool. This guide compares four ways to do it, with the commands to run, and explains how to fix the errors you're most likely to hit.

Before you start: where transcripts come from

Every method below downloads the captions YouTube already has for a video. Those are either uploaded by the creator or auto-generated by YouTube's speech recognition. None of them transcribe audio. That has two consequences:

  • A video with captions turned off has no transcript to download, whatever tool you use.
  • Auto-generated captions have no punctuation or speaker labels and often get names and technical terms wrong.

A channel's videos are also split across tabs: regular videos, Shorts, and past livestreams. Decide which ones you need before you start.

The four methods at a glance

MethodGood forNeeds
YouTube transcript panelA handful of videosNothing
yt-dlpSubtitle files for a whole channelCommand line
Python (youtube-transcript-api)Custom pipelinesPython, error handling
Bulk tool or APIHundreds of videos, no codeCredits

Method 1: YouTube's transcript panel (manual)

  1. Open the video and expand the description ("...more").
  2. Click "Show transcript". The panel opens beside the video.
  3. Use the panel's menu to hide timestamps if you want plain text, then select the text and copy it.

This is free and needs no tools, but it's one video at a time and the copied text has no title or link attached. Past ten or so videos, use one of the methods below.

Method 2: yt-dlp (free, command line)

yt-dlp is an open-source downloader that can save subtitles without the video. Point it at the channel's videos tab:

yt-dlp --skip-download --write-subs --write-auto-subs \
  --sub-langs en --sub-format vtt \
  -o "%(title)s [%(id)s].%(ext)s" \
  "https://www.youtube.com/@ChannelName/videos"

You get one .vtt subtitle file per video. Run it again with the /shorts or /streams tab if you need those too. Two things to know:

  • Auto-generated VTT files repeat each line two or three times because of how YouTube rolls captions. You'll need to clean them before reading or analysis.
  • On large channels YouTube often starts throttling or asking you to sign in to confirm you're not a bot. Slow it down with --sleep-requests 1 and expect to resume runs.

Method 3: Python with youtube-transcript-api

The youtube-transcript-api library returns clean timed segments, without the duplication problem. It works on one video ID at a time, so list the channel's IDs with yt-dlp first:

yt-dlp --flat-playlist --print id "https://www.youtube.com/@ChannelName/videos" > ids.txt
from youtube_transcript_api import YouTubeTranscriptApi

ytt_api = YouTubeTranscriptApi()
for video_id in open("ids.txt").read().split():
    try:
        transcript = ytt_api.fetch(video_id, languages=["en"])
        text = " ".join(snippet.text for snippet in transcript)
        open(f"{video_id}.txt", "w", encoding="utf-8").write(text)
    except Exception as error:
        print(video_id, "failed:", error)

This works well from a laptop for a few hundred videos. From cloud servers (AWS, GCP, and similar), YouTube frequently blocks requests, and you'll need proxies and retry logic.

Method 4: A bulk tool (no code)

If you don't want to maintain scripts, proxies, and cleanup, a bulk tool does the same job from a browser. Our Channel Transcript Extractor lists every video on a channel, including Shorts and past livestreams. You filter and select the videos you want and the job runs in the background. You then download a ZIP as Text, JSON, SRT, or VTT, or as one combined text file. It uses one credit per video, and new accounts get free credits. The tool page has a full walkthrough with an example channel.

For pipelines, the same jobs are available through the REST API and a CLI:

npx youtube-transcript-agent channel download "https://www.youtube.com/@ChannelName" --wait --output transcripts.zip

Troubleshooting

"Transcript not available" or no subtitle file

The video has no captions, or none in the language you asked for. Check the video's settings menu under Subtitles/CC. If only another language exists, request that language or leave the language unset.

Some videos are missing from the list

Private, members-only, and age-restricted videos can't be fetched without signing in as an account that has access. Also check you included the Shorts and livestream tabs.

Requests start failing partway through

This is usually YouTube rate-limiting your IP. Add delays, run in smaller batches, and keep a list of finished video IDs so you can resume without starting over.

The text is one long unpunctuated block

That's how auto-generated captions look. Keep timestamps if you need to find moments, or ask an AI assistant to add punctuation and paragraphs. Our YouTube-to-ChatGPT workflow has prompts for that.

Is this allowed?

It depends on your use. Read our overview of YouTube's terms of service and transcripts before building a dataset or republishing text.
