For Researchers and Journalists: Analyze Video Content at Scale

Whether you're doing discourse analysis, market research, or checking what a public figure said on camera, watching hours of video is slow. Download transcripts in bulk to search, code, and quote spoken content, and keep the video link and timestamp for every passage so you can verify it against the source.

Key Benefits

Workflows

Example workflows

Study how a channel covers a topic over time

You're analyzing how a news or commentary channel has talked about a policy issue over several years.

  1. Paste the channel link and load the video list. Each row shows the publish date and duration.
  2. Search titles for the topic, or select a range of the newest videos for a recent time window.
  3. Download as Text with title, video ID, and link on, so every file stays traceable to its source.
  4. Import the files into NVivo, ATLAS.ti, or a notebook for coding, keyword frequency, or sentiment analysis.

Find and verify quotes from interviews and press conferences

A government department posts every press briefing to YouTube, and you need what was said about one subject this quarter.

  1. Load the department's channel or briefing playlist and select the briefings you need.
  2. Download as one combined text file with timestamps on, then search it for the subject or a speaker's name.
  3. Open the video at the timestamp next to each candidate quote and check the wording before you publish.

Build a citable dataset

You're comparing talks across a conference playlist and need to cite specific passages.

  1. Download the playlist as JSON with timestamps on. Each file includes the title, video ID, URL, caption language, and timed segments.
  2. Store the files with your project data. The video ID and start time of a segment are enough to cite and re-find any passage.
Good to know

Before you start

Check auto-generated captions before quoting

Many videos only have YouTube's auto-generated captions, which can get names, numbers, and technical terms wrong. Treat a transcript as a way to find a passage, then confirm the wording in the video.

Public videos with captions only

We download existing captions from public videos. Private, members-only, and age-restricted videos can't be fetched, and a video with captions turned off has no transcript. Each video in a bulk job uses one credit, including ones without captions.

Review the terms for your use

Using transcripts for research or reporting raises copyright and platform-terms questions that depend on your project and jurisdiction. Our guide to YouTube's terms of service covers the basics.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I import the transcripts into NVivo or ATLAS.ti?

Yes. Download as Text and import the .txt files as documents. Keep the title and link options on so each document stays traceable to its video.

Can I get transcripts in a specific language?

Choose a preferred caption language before starting the job. If a video has captions in that language they are used; otherwise the transcript depends on the captions YouTube has for that video.

How do I cite a passage from a transcript?

Download with timestamps on. Cite the video title, channel, URL, and the timestamp of the passage, and check the wording against the video.
